Clarity
The skilled diamond grader takes many characteristics into consideration when grading the clarity of diamonds. Every diamond is unique with distinctive internal and external characteristics. For all grades except I1, I2 and I3, a 10 power magnification microscope or loupe (pronounced "loop") is used to observe the diamond. Flawless stones have no inclusions or surface blemishes. Internally flawless diamond can have minor surface blemishes that can be polished or removed to reach the flawless grade. Inclusions are internal markings ranging from fractures or "feathers," black or dark carbon spots, or clouds which lower the transparency and decrease the amount of light that can be transmitted through the diamond.
